The bi-monthly periodical was a beacon from the New Weird America during the early aughts.
Arthur was best known for the column from Byron Coley and Thurston Moore, along with art from the likes of Spike Jonze and Art Spiegelman — and it was free. It suspended publication in 2007 and ceased operations in 2011.
Thankfully, the magazine is returning to print “renewed, refreshed, reinvigorated,” in a new format that resembles a daily newspaper: printed in color and black and white on newsprint, with ads only on the back covers.
The relaunch is a partnership with Portland, Oregon’s Floating World Comics. The new Arthur will be edited by Jay Babcock and art directed by Yasmin Khan, and returns its “gang of goofs, know-it-alls and village explainers.” While no longer free, the broadsheet will be available for only $5 on December 22. It is available for pre-order now.
