During a special Q&A session, R&B auteur R. Kelly has revealed more details about the forthcoming episodes of Trapped In The Closet – and things sound predictably insane.
Kelly unveiled the new chapters at a special screening last night at Manhattan’s Landmark Sunshine Cinema. Pitchfork sent a scribe along to document the event, and they’ve offered some tantalising hints about what to expect from Western culture’s kookiest melodrama.
Intriguingly, Trapped In The Closet: The Next Instalment promises an odd structural contrivance in which characters are intermittently shown being interviewed about events on a Jeremy Kyle-esque chat show (a move apparently imported from absurdly underrated Chris Rock vehicle Pootie Tang). In terms of new characters, we can look forward to a gravelly voiced thug called Beeny and a blind kerbcrawler. Twan, everyone’s favourite wayward naif, also returns with an expanded role.
The Q&A session following the screening saw Kelly – apparently looking natty in a black suit and leather gloves – expanding on his plans for the series. Kelly claimed to have recorded music for another 85 – yes, 85 – chapters. He also claimed that a Broadway transfer is also in the works, although there appears to be little in the way of concrete details.
In his words,Trapped In The Closet is “an alien, and I’m happy to be one of the astronauts to take this trip to places unknown”. He also revealed that he’s turned down celebrities who’ve asked to appear in the series, preferring to keep the show full of new blood, and that Pimp Lucius was inspired by his stuttering stepfather.
Trapped In The Closet: The Next Instalment drops on November 23. It’s not yet clear if any of FACT’s speculative predictions about the series have come good.
