Pussy Riot documentary to premiere at Sundance

The (ongoing) Pussy Riot saga will see life as a documentary.

Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer, a documentary co-directed by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin, will make its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, according to Rolling Stone. The film chronicles the arrest and trial Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich for their protest performance in a Russian church.

Pussy Riot has dominated music and political news for the better part of a year, leading to the collective being named as a contender for Time‘s Person of the Year; the winner will be announced December 14. Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer will be a part of Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Competition. The Utah film festival runs from January 17 to 27, 2013.

Last month, Samutsevich was freed on appeal, but she later accused her legal team of a string of oversights and misdemeanours, suggesting that the team had deliberately used the trial as a platform to curry favour with the Russian opposition. Meanwhile, Pitchfork reports that video of the “punk prayer” performance has been banned in Russia for “extremism.”
