Rather like compatriot Legowelt, Dave Huismans is in his element when darting between masks.

As 2562, he’s planted his flag in the hinterlands of dubstep (see 2008’s fine Aerial) and, on 2011’s Fever, reconfigured vintage disco records into crunching contemporary breakbeat. The A Made Up Sound moniker, meanwhile, has long allowed him to explore punchier, house-leaning territory. Following recent releases for 50Weapons (AMUS’ dusty ‘Malfunctions’ EP) and When In Doubt (the field recording-heavy Air Jordan collection), Huismans is preparing to drop a new 12″ on his own eponymous label – and it’s a very odd proposition indeed.

B-side ‘Endgame’, a stop-start electro cut full of sudden dropouts and false starts, comes over like a particularly steely Jam City track. For what it’s worth, though, we’d pick out A-side ‘Ahead’ as the star attraction. It’s pure, giddy mischief-making at its best – a disorientating jumble of botched soul samples and disassembled breakbeat programming, somewhere between Kahn’s ‘Dread’ and Theo Parrish’s barmy ‘Any Other Styles’.

Huismans will drop ‘Ahead’/’Endgame’ later this month on 12″. Substantial clips of both, noted by Juno Plus, are available to stream below.
