Ifan Dafydd – the fellow behind 2011’s dolorous Amy Winehouse flip ‘No Good’ – is back with another goosebump raiser.
Almost a year since the release of ‘Treehouse’ on Push & Run, Dafydd has offered up his first new track in an age. ‘Celwydd’ is plucked from a forthcoming compilation from Welsh label Recordiau Lliwgar, and features vocal contributions from singer Alys Williams.
As is customary in a Dafydd article, we’ll address the elephant in the room: as per ‘No Good’ or ‘Treehouse’, ‘Celwydd’ is essentially a James Blake simulacrum. Still, it’s a good one – a weary and woozy exercise in sepulchral beat music, carried by Williams’ mangled vocal line. Not as playful as ‘No Good’, mind, but a worthy offering to be filed alongside Shlohmo, Lapalux, et al.
