A new documentary investigates NY rap’s nouvelle vague.
Spit Gold Under An Empire, directed by Montreal’s Emily Kai Bock, surveys New York’s underground rap scene. Bock, it should be noted, was responsible for Grimes’ fantastic ‘Oblivion’ clip. Contributors include scene-leaders Angel Haze and Mykki Blanco, with CJ Fly, Kirk Knight and The Underacheivers also appearing in the film. A trailer is above; as per ‘Oblivion’, it’s a beautifully shot and thoroughly classy piece.
Spit Gold Under An Empire is part of the New American Noise series documenting a host of different scenes across the country, with Portland, New Orleans and Detroit all coming under the magnifying glass. The film will premiere at Sundance Film Festival later this week.
