Yoko Ono announces one-off return of the Plastic Ono Band

Yoko Ono is to celebrate her 80th birthday by reconvening the Plastic Ono Band.

Convened in 1969 as a vehicle for Ono’s works with John Lennon, the rotating Plastic Ono Band project has welcomed a host of famous names into its ranks over the years: Eric Clapton, Ketih Moon, Phil Spector and Yes’ Alan White have all put in time with the ensemble. Live Peace In Toronto 1969 remains the only record officially credited to the pseud0-collective, although the Plastic Ono Band served as Lennon and Ono’s de facto backing band throughout the early 1970s.

After a long period of inactivity, the Band was revived for 2009’s Between My Head And The Sky, with Ono’s son Sean Lennon and Cornelius putting in time with the Band. An all-star 2010 live reunion, meanwhile, saw the likes of Lady Gaga, Thurston Moore & Kim Gordon, Scissor Sisters and Paul Simon all make guest appearances.

As NME report, the Plastic Ono Band will ride again this year with a special one-off show in Germany. The performance will take place at Berlin’s Volksbühne on Sunday February 17. Once again, Sean Lennon will help lead the ensemble, and we’d be very surprised if a few unlikely guests don’t crop up on the night too.

Ono will curate this year’s Meltdown Festival, and promises “an element of feminism and the plight of women” for her programme.
