Red Bull Music Academy have launched a new six part mini-documentary series, titled (forgive us) H∆SHTAG$.
The series will investigate the ways in which online culture has affected, infected or instigated various scenes and styles. They’ve pulled together a bunch of illustrious talking heads for Episode 1, which focuses on alternative R&B and dark modern pop. How To Dress Well talks about the technological constraints that informed his sound, and sounds off about the politics of radio playlisting (“You can imagine press guys at a desk getting together asking “Can you imagine suburban white girls putting on make-up to this getting ready to go out?”). The Weeknd producer Zodiac, Miguel and Rochelle Jordan are among those talking about the development of the genre and, more pertinently, the way the internet has shaped the way we listen.
Future instalments of the series promise interviews with TNGHT, Mount Kimbie, Flying Lotus and Main Attrakionz. Head here for more information.
