Even if you haven’t flicked through the prospectus for Goldsmiths’ Popular Music course, you’ll be well aware of some of its alumni.
The programme at the South London arts college is still relatively new, but it’s already churned out a few stars: James Blake developed his trademark sound there a few years back, and Katy B is also a former student. Eager to smooth the process from study to stage, skewed house producer (and Goldsmiths student) Thefft and a host of other students and alumni have joined forces to launch NXRecords – a label designed to showcase material by graduates from the course.
The label comes with logistical and spiritual backing from Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records, and promises something more substantial than just another “university record label”. A mixtape and CD compilation are both in the works, but the imprint will open for business properly with a free showcase night on Friday 15 February at St. James’ Church in New Cross. Thefft will play, as will Dragger, Shanaz Dorsett, Niomi Eve, Jimmy Marples and ANIИA – presumably all names we’ll be seeing on NXRecords before too long.
An official launch party will follow at the Southbank as part of the PureGold event on May 9. You can read our recent chat with Thefft here.
