Hair Police is the union of three esteemed US noise practitioners: Robert Beatty, who released the great Persuasive Barrier LP under the Three Legged Race moniker in 2012; Mike Connelly of Failing Lights; and Trevor Tremaine. Although insanely prolific between 2002-2010, the group have been relatively quiet since, sneaking out the Every Line EP on Gods Of Tundra. Props to Type Records, then, for providing a roof for their latest LP, the hypnotic Mercurial Rites.
Type describe the record as a collection of “gruesome dungeon noise”, and the description fits: gurgling fiends (‘We Prepare’), foundry rhythms (‘The Crevice’) and distortion (just about everything) all feature. Still, it’s closer in spirit to Black Dice or Excepter than your next US noise grubber, boasting strong psych leanings and all manner of strange and disconcerting timbres. Ugly, freaky tomfoolery.
Mercurial Rights is available now.
