Carl Craig, Factory Floor and Trent Reznor sign up for synth documentary We’ve enjoyed homespun synth documentaries from Vince Clarke and Adrian Utley in recent months, but I Dream Of Wires looks like the real deal.

Robert Fantinatto’s forthcoming survey bills itself as being “for the serious modular synthesiser and electronic music fanatic”. The film is produced by Jason Amm, aka Ghostly International resident Solvent, and plots the rise, fall and subsequent rise of modular synth technology.

Talking heads will include Carl Craig, Trent Reznor and Factory Floor. Other veterans recruited for the film include Throbbing Gristle/Carter Tutti’s Chris Carter, John Foxx, Gary Numan, Mute’s Daniel Miller and Vince Clarke. Border Community’s James Holden and Luke Abbott are lined up to appear, as are Dutch techno eccentric Legowelt and Clark. According to the filmmakers:

“What started out as a “vintage-revival scene” in the ’90s has grown into an underground phenomena with a growing market of modular obsessives craving ever more wild and innovative sounds and interfaces. Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument — it is an essential tool for radical new sounds and a bonafide subculture.”

An 85 minute cut of the film will premiere at festivals in May. A four hour redux, billed as the “hardcore edition”, will also be available on DVD in June. Fans of oscillator pornography are advised to check out the extended trailer below. Sizeable interviews with C2 (Carl Craig) and, er, C2 (Chris Carter) are also available to sample below.
