The roughly-sketched ‘That Girl Thang’ finds the Purple One exploring the highest register of his voice, armed with only an intricately-picked acoustic guitar. Unlike Prince’s recent dispatches, this one trades throwback boogie and bedroom funk for stripped down songcraft and very Princely lyrics (“Hum a little secret / People think I’m free / Instead of a fifth dimension prisoner / in ecstasy.”).
