DJ Rashad’s highly anticipated Hyperdub debut is available to sample, and it’s a killer collection.
Of the numerous high-profile footwork LPs released in the last 12 months, last year’s Teklife Vol. 1: Welcome To The Chi was the harshest and ugliest of the bunch. Although frequently thrilling, it also felt like a record that could have done with a little trimming and refining. The Rollin‘ EP sees Rashad on much more economical form, and shows the producer playing with his voice – ‘Let It Go’ continues Rashad’s flirtation with jungle, and the title track is a softer variant on Just A Taste‘s frazzled soul. The star, though, is DJ Manny team-up ‘Drums Please’, memorably aired on Hyperdub’s last Rinse FM show. Essentially a drum roll sent spiralling into infinity, it’s a startling reminder that Rashad still has the capacity to surprise.
Rollin’ is due on March 18.
