The UK representative of Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder label sets the mood on FACT mix 372.
Raised in Essex, Lapalux first came to our attention with 2011’s Many Faces Out of Focus EP. He’s since become a fully-fledged member of Brainfeeder, sharing a label with the likes of Thundercat, Gaslamp Killer and Martyn where his music’s gone from strength to strength. Although he’s loosely associated with the UK’s post-dubstep movement, Lapalux’s filter-heavy but hip-hop savvy sound has more in common with the electronic romanticism of more established artists like Bonobo and Daedelus, and his debut album Nostalchic, due on March 25, should see him established as one of that style’s leading players.
Lapalux’s FACT mix, sub-titled ‘Lapalux’s Mood Mix’ is just a delight. Call us soppy, but we’ve always felt there’s room for the chill-out mix to be revived, saved from the identikit hotel lobby horror-shows that the concept brings to mind (see Optimo’s Why Nobody Comes Back to Mine for the sort of antidote that we’re talking about), and with weepies by Sibylle Baier, slowed-down ballads by SWV and Beyonce, Lapalux’s own ‘Flower’ and the none-more-smooth ‘Machine Gun Funk’, FACT mix 372 is a masterclass in setting a mood. Sink in, below.
