Red Bull Music Academy New York presents “A Night of Improvised Round Robin Duets.”

According to a press release, the format is simple: “One musician starts a solo improvisation lasting five minutes. Another musician then joins him for five minutes of duo improvisation. After those five minutes, musician #1 leaves the stage and musician #3 joins musician #2 for another five minutes, and so on and so forth for two hours.”

Participating musicians include ?uestlove, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Julia Holter, Flying Lotus collaborator Thundercat, Andrew WK, and DJ Spinna. The lineup is rounded out by saxophonist Matana Roberts (TV on the Radio, Prefuse 73), Bernie Worrell, James Chance, Mary Halvorson, Don Byron, Dosh, Erik Friedlander, and Joe Lovano.

The event takes place on May 1 and tickets are available now. The round robin session is a part of RBMA New York’s loaded, month-long schedule. [via Pitchfork]
