Contrary to reports earlier this week, Kanye West’s new album is not titled I Am God.
The rapper’s next single, however, does appear to be titled ‘I Am A God’. On March 25, the BBC and others reported that Kanye was “contemplating” I Am God as the title of his next solo album, his first since 2010’s searing My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (though Kanye has, of course, released two collaborative albums in the time since: Watch the Throne, with Jay-Z, and Cruel Summer with G.O.O.D. Music). According to “a reliable source in West’s camp”, speaking to the Huffington Post, the news was only half true… although West’s next single will be titled ‘I Am A God’, the album’s name is yet to be confirmed.
“We would never be so presumptuous or sacrilegious to call ourselves the supreme being,” the source continued, while HuffPost add that “while everyone will have to wait for the actual song to parse the specifics of the song’s message, the source hinted that the idea was generally that all people are manifestations of a higher power.”
G.O.O.D. Music’s Malik Yusef appears to have confirmed this on Twitter, explaining that the title is a reference to Psalm 82e “you are all Gods / And all of you are children of the Most High / But you shall die like men / And fall like one of the princes.
