Stream Pursuit Grooves' new album, Broadcasting A Sensory Sequence

Vanese Smith, aka Pursuit Grooves, is back with her first full-length effort since 2011’s Frantically Hopeful

In 2010, Smith already had a pair of self-released albums under her belt. Her Fox Trot Mannerisms EP for Pinch’s Tectonic label – a stunningly sensual collection of disjointed beat music – served as both her introduction to the world and her artistic high watermark. Frantically Hopeful, meanwhile, is a severely underrated album of stammering soul, and a must-listen for admirers of Cooly G’s Playin’ Me. Both records are essential, basically – if you don’t have either, get moving.

As XLR8R report, Smith has upped a new LP onto her Bandcamp, titled Broadcasting A Sensory Sequence. Smith bills the album as a “funky” record, and it’s certainly lither than its angular predecessor. Smith’s vocals are essentially absent from the album, and there’s a psychedelic quality throughout – ‘Silhouette Circuits’ is more kosmische than boom-bap, and ‘Code Nexion’ is a woozy UK funky cut a la Shy One. First impressions suggest a slighter record than its predecessors, but Broadcasting A Sensory Sequence still stuffed to the gills with wit and flair – we can’t get enough of Geiger counter riddim ‘Great Light Regions’.

Broadcasting A Sensory Sequence is out now on What Rules. The release follows 2012 “mini-album” 91 Fellows.
