Twitter launches #Music, its much-talked about "music discovery" platform

Twitter’s much-talked about new music platform, Twitter #Music, has been unveiled today.

Described as “a fresh approach to finding new music by using Tweets and follows to power discovery”, the loose premise is that Twitter #Music will help you discover new artists from the comfort of your iPhone / iPad via the artists that you already follow, as well as through Twitter charts. It’s already integrated with Spotify and Rdio, and subscribers to those services can log-in with their accounts to hear full tracks (whereas iTunes, as you’d expect, only provides a preview). Access for Android users is promised in time.

Twitter #Music uses a grid system that works on the basis of four tabs: ‘Popular’ shows music that’s trending on Twitter at the time, ‘Emerging’ shows “hidden talent found in tweets”, while ‘Suggested’ recommends acts based on who you follow. ‘#NowPlaying’, meanwhile, shows what songs your friends are currently listening to. Twitter recently acquired a start-up called We Are Hunted, which tracks popular songs across social networks general, and now powers this app.

The app has been in the works for some time, but was finally unveiled this morning on Good Morning America; you can read more of Twitter’s words about the service here. Downloaded Twitter #Music? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
