Atlanta heroes Deerhunter return with their latest studio effort, Monomania.
2010’s Halcyon Digest was their tightest collection to date, primarily sticking to mid-tempo balladry and pretty jangle. As prefaced by a madcap Fallon appearance, Monomania – their first record since replacing bassist Josh Fauver with Josh McKay – sees them shred the rulebook, recapturing some of the brutality last heard on 2007’s Cryptograms. Cox has pointed to Bo Diddley, The Ramones and Ricky Nelson as key influences, and there’s traces of all three in this messy, colouful collection. From the feedback freakout of ‘Leather Jacket II’ to the frowzy disco of ‘T.H.M’, it’s a record characterised by scuzz and sleaze, and continues to cement their position as one of indie-rock’s most interesting contemporary outfits.
Monomania is due on May 7 via 4AD. Head to NPR to listen.
