As part of their Smashing Pumpkins reissue drive, EMI are to give The Aeroplane Flies High a second crack of the whip – and they’ve gone well beyond the call of duty. 

Originally released in 1996, the platinum-selling The Aeroplane Flies High pulled together expanded versions of singles from 1995 opus Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, plus a sizeable booklet. Following reissues of Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, EMI will reissue the box set, augmented with a smorgasbord of unheard material.

As is to be expected, EMI’s reissue will feature remastered versions of all 33 of the album’s original tracks. In addition, the reissue will feature a frankly intimidating 90 lost demos, live recordings and alternate versions spread over five CDs. A sixth disc will features an assortment of live recordings from 1996’s Mellon Collie tour, and a supplementary DVD documenting a concert recording in France also makes the cut. The package will also include track-by-track annotations from Billy Corgan (which, given the number of tracks, is basically a novella’s worth of material) and liner notes from David Wild, all enclosed in a 46-page book.

Commenting on the set, Corgan writes: “What I like about The Aeroplane Flies High is that it’s almost the existential backwater of the Mellon Collie album. Listening to the music gathered here is a little bit like seeing what goes on behind the walls of Disneyland…At least for me, the behind the scenes feel heard on The Aeroplane Flies High represents something revealing not found on the main album. In retrospect, it’s a nice document of how we arrived at the apex of Mellon Collie – and also what standing on that apex did to us personally.”
