If you’re not already on board with L.A.’s Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker, it’s high time to hop on the bandwagon.
In many ways, Reyes-Whittaker is a kindred spirit to Maurice Fulton, operating at the point where funk, house and electro intersect without ever quite swearing allegiance to one in particular. He’s been responsible for a host of killer releases across a number of aliases: as The Reflektor, he released the punchdrunk electro set Las Ruinas Mayas on Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats label in 2012; working as The Abstract Eye, he put out an ace 2012 EP for Eglo; and further releases have arrived under the pseudonym Julian Abelar. The lion’s share of his work, however, appears under his Gifted & Blessed/GB alias, under whose auspices he’s released for All City, Sound In Colour and Ubiquity.
As Resident Advisor report, Reyes-Whittaker will drop a new GB album in the coming month. Within These Machines is due, as per this year’s 3 Aspects Of One EP (one of our favourite Bandcamp releases of the month, incidentally), on Reyes-Whittaker’s own Gifted & Blessed label. The album will be his first as GB since 2009’s Healing Tones: Inverted Listening.
No release date has been set for Within These Machines, but the album is expected to arrive in late July or early August. 3 Aspects Of One is available to stream below.
