Well-connected producer and composer Adrian Younge has announced another full-length hip-hop team-up.
Younge has already enjoyed a high-profile rap collaboration this year, releasing the luxuriant album-cum-revenge-drama Twelve Reasons To Die with Ghostface Killah. As Exclaim report, the L.A. producer has now signed up veteran Oakland crew Souls Of Mischief for a album-length set of narrative-heavy throwback hip-hop.
Adrian Younge Presents Souls Of Mischief will arrive in September. Speaking on US show Sway In The Morning, Younge revealed that the album will be an high-concept affair, documenting some sort of violent event in the opening tracks where “Souls Of Mischief almost gets killed by some dude that was just crazy.” Over the course of the record, the band explore the consequences of said crisis, exploring “different stories that are a result of this volatile incident.”
The album will also have a star narrator, A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad. According to Younge, the album won’t try to push the sonic envelope too far: “If somebody misses that kind of sound, they’ll be happy to hear this album because it goes back to that time, you know. Kind of like how the Ghostface album kind of went back to that time.” Vintage Tribe and De La Soul Is Dead are both fingered as influences.
Adrian Younge Presents Souls Of Mischief will arrive in September. Souls Of Mischief are currently midway through a Stateside tour to mark 20 years since the release of Hieroglphics landmark 93 ‘Til Infinity.
