Open Frame – the Brisbane festival run in association with Australian experimental imprint Room40 – will return for the eighth time in 2013.
Curated by Room40 boss Lawrence English, Open Frame offers an array of talks, gigs and events spread across the city. This year’s theme, inspired by Luigi Russolo’s 1913 seminal art text L’Arte die Rumori, is ‘The Future Is Noise’, and those familiar with Room40’s past signings (which include the likes of Chris Abrahams, Bee Mask, Tim Hecker and Grouper) will know what to expect.
English has assembled a fascinating bill, marrying both dancefloor savvy and theoretical rigour. Recent Hyperdub acquisition Laurel Halo will appear, showcasing her considered and unpredictable live set. Objekt – he of immaculate techno productions like ‘Porcupine’ and ‘Cactus’ – will provide support. Elsewhere, ex-Emeralds guitarist Mark McGuire will give his freewheeling psych stylings an airing, with Blank Realm and Circular Keys as support. Other treats on the bill include sound art legend Akio Suzuki, Spanish artist Francisco López and musician/theorist David Toop.
Events run from August 22 until September 28 in various venues across Brisbane; see below for dates and ticketing details.
