Back in 2009 Chance was then known simply as Chano, and two videos have emerged showing the prodigious rapper’s early mic skills.

This is the kind of thing the internet was made for, and shines a light on the early promise of the rapper whose recent breakout Acid Rap has been one of the year’s most acclaimed albums.

The quality might not be up to much, but you can hear Chance taking on familiarly nerdy subject matter, riffing on Mega Man and exclaiming “I ain’t sell no drugs, and I ain’t tryin’ to be a thug.” He fares less well in a battle with fellow spitter Monster Mike as he oddly spouts “I don’t want to talk about Mike, cuz he’s my real friend” which might be one of the weakest battle jibes we’ve heard for a while, but c’mon, he was only 16.
