The L.A. synthesizer wrangler returns.
Californian nomad Jeff Witscher’s Rene Hell project has never been easy to fully get your head around, and that’s probably exactly what has made it so resoundingly interesting. Taking in large helpings of influence from classical minimalism, Berlin dub techno, noise and who knows what else, Witscher’s first two Type full-lengths Porcelain Opera and The Terminal Symphony established him as something of a maverick figure.
His latest LP Vanilla Call Option is set for the PAN imprint, and looks to take his sound even further into darkness with references to Bernard Parmigiani‘s game changing musique concrete and Charles Dodge‘s twisted electronic experimentation. It was apparently pieced together in airports, libraries and galleries, but instead of hurriedly pumping out the usual beat constructions, Witscher used the peculiar situation to reject regular ideas of melody and rhythm in favour of something totally unique.
