Morgan Zarate returns with his third Hyperdub release in three years – and, as ever, it’s a technicolour delight.
We’ve repped Zarate for yonks over at FACT: we’ve long had a tender spot for his former outfit (forward-facing groove trio Spacek), and we gave him the New Talent once-over when he began making moves as a solo artist proper.
His 2011 Hookid EP for Hyperdub offered fantastically polyglot club music, combining funky’s ear for syncopation and dubstep’s lumber with the attention span of glitch. Last year’s Broken Heart Collector, meanwhile, was led by a chrome-plated slab of melodramatic electro-pop – the sort of track that, in a better world, Cheryl or Ellie would be riding to the top of the charts.
Zarate’s latest team-up with the label is Taker, another set of vanguardist R&B with scores of tricks up its sleeve. From the Roses Gabor-led title track – previously heard on Kode9’s comprehensive Rinse 22 – to ‘Katsu”s trap-attack, it’s another fine example of Zarate’s anything-goes spirit. Taker is due on September 23.
