Tree‘s Sunday School 2 is one of the year’s finest mixtapes, and a few months after its release the Chicago rapper has finally offered us a taste of what’s next.
‘Shots’ is brief, but shows off a similarly well balanced blend of dusty samples and contemporary street sounds (which Tree himself has labelled ‘soul trap’) and of course highlights the unmistakable voice of one of the city’s most interesting rappers. Nowhere near as self-consciously weird as Chance and not desperate to prove his South Side credibility either, Tree’s rhymes are thoughtful but rugged, and ‘Shots’ is just another reason to pay attention.
