Russian punk protestor under medical supervision.
Imprisoned Pussy Riot member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has been moved to a prison hospital on the seventh day of a hunger strike.
Tolokonnikova began a hunger strike on September 23 to protest against “slavery-like” conditions in the prison.
Her husband, Pyotr Verzilov, said the hospitalisation was a positive step, although her condition is not clear. Her lawyers have been barred from contacting her since Thursday.
Tolokonnikova’s hunger strike comes after her fellow band member Maria Alyokhina held an 11-day hunger strike in May in protest against a Russian court’s decision to ban her from attending her own parole hearing.
Two members of the band are serving two-year jail sentences after being convicted of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” following a Pussy Riot performance in Moscow’s largest cathedral in February 2012. [via Billboard]
