London radio station Choice FM will be replaced by Capital XTRA this Sunday.
Britain’s first 24 hour black music station with a licence, the then-South London-based Choice launched as an independent station in 1990. The station would steadily expand across the next decade, and in 2004 was bought by Capital Radio Group – a move that caused commotion at the time, with listeners accusing the station of selling out and several Choice DJs losing their jobs.
This week, however, marks Choice’s last week as Choice. From next week, the station will be known as Capital XTRA (which, let’s face it, sounds more like a credit card more than it does a radio station), and will carry the strapline DANCE.URBAN.UK.
As previously reported, hip-hop veteran Tim Westwood marks one of the station’s new signings, with UK garage muscle-head Craig David and Avicii also confirmed for regular slots. As Radio Today report, Ashley Tabor, founder and executive president at Global (Capital’s owners) had the following to say of the move:
“The launch of Capital XTRA is a great moment for listeners, for commercial radio, for the DAB platform and for our team here at Global. People right across the UK will now get to enjoy a truly national station in Capital XTRA – the only commercial station to play urban dance music nationwide. We’re taking the best presenters and shows and building on that by adding even more new talent to the line up and we believe Capital XTRA has a very bright future.”
