Moz book hits number one.
Morrissey’s Autobiography has rocketed to the top of the UK bestsellers chart in its first week on sale to become one of the fastest-selling memoirs ever, shifting 34,918 copies.
The tome, which was cheekily published as a Penguin Classic in its first edition, also snatched the record for the strongest first-week sales of a musician’s biography, beating Keith Richards’ 2010 autobiography Life. Unusually for a celebrity memoir, the book was published in paperback straight away, making it significantly cheaper than the usual first edition.
Autobiography has received mixed reviews so far, with praise for its wry humour and detailed depiction of ’60s Manchester matched by criticism of its character assassinations and lengthy accounts of legal wrangles. The book also hints at Morrissey’s romantic relationships, leading to speculation over his sexuality that he countered last week with a statement defining himself as “humasexual”.
The book is only available in the UK, Europe and Commonwealth so far, with a publisher in the US yet to be confirmed.
