This Saturday, Nonclassical will take over Kings Cross’ Scala venue for a large-scale celebration of composition for percussion.

The Pioneers of Percussion mini-festival certainly isn’t business as usual for the venue, with a string of modern classical works for drummers set to be performed around the space. It’s a varied schedule, flitting from important minimalist works through tabla displays to Stockhausen performances.

Steve Reich’s mesmeric 1971 touchstone Drumming will be performed in its entirety – not a common occurrence by any means – in the club’s main space. Still one of the most forceful and arresting works in Reich’s canon, it’s a piece with plenty to say to those with clubbier sensibilities. Edgard Varese’s pioneering bell-and-percussion piece Ionisation will be performed, as will John Cage’s water gong-led 2nd Construction.

Other notable bookings include Amadeo Roldan’s Ritmicas – “one of the earliest scored works for percussion” – gamelan outfit Southbank Gamelan, and taiko drummer Joji Hirota. Works from the likes of Stockhausen, Bartok, Xenakis and Prokofiev will also be on display, with DJs rounding out the night.
