They might be missing the shrill presence of Juicy J (he’s been a bit busy, if you didn’t notice) but you can’t keep the Triple 6 down.
Renamed Da Mafia 6ix, DJ Paul’s crew have finally dropped their first mixtape, and entitled 6ix Commandments, it sounds as if they’re on familiar territory. They might have a new name, but Southern rap oldschoolers will be pleased to know that little has changed. The moody, rolling instrumentals, grim, hard-as-nails chants and pitch-black imagery are intact and sounding more relevant than ever.
Sure it’s a little odd not hearing Juicy’s omnipresent “shut the fuck up!” in the background, but with appearances from Spaceghostpurrp (we’re guessing he was pretty psyched on this one), 8ball & MJG, Yelawolf and more it’s hard to complain. Hell, Juicy himself even pops in for a bar on epic crew cut ‘Body Parts’ – maybe there’s a full Mafia reunion coming soon?
