We’ve always known that M.I.A. gives good video, and her clip for new single ‘Y.A.L.A’ keeps up the high standard with its blinding colours and trippy lights emanating from every facet of the Sri Lankan art punk.
‘Y.A.L.A,’, a Partysquad-produced track from new album Matangi, is M.I.A.’s karmic take on the ubiquitous YOLO catchphrase, with her acronym standing for “you always live again”. The video was directed by Daniel Sannwald and M.I.A. and made in collaboration with i-D magazine and fashion brand KENZO. It’s also been timed with the launch of Vice / i-D’s new site, which looks gorgeous. You can check it out here.
FACT caught up with M.I.A. earlier this month to find out about the making of Matangi and living through “the time of the bros”. The rapper’s recent show in New York featured a guest appearance (via the magic of the internet) from Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, while she also took a moment to drop in on Jimmy Fallon’s TV show to perform ‘Come Walk With Me’ with The Roots.
