Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith takes issue with Kendrick’s Rapper of the Year profile and cancels the rapper’s planned performance.

In the December issue of GQ, Kendrick Lamar is named Rapper of the Year, despite the fact that he only released a handful of verses in 2013. However, despite acknowledging the honor, Top Dawg Entertainment boss Anthony Tiffith has taken issue with how Lamar and TDE are portrayed in Steve Marsh’s profile.

According to the TDE CEO, the article, which describes TDE as a “baby Death Row Records” and compares Tiffith as Suge Knight, put both TDE and himself “in a negative life” by focusing “on what most people would see as drama or bs.”

Commenting on Kendrick and his crew’s hesitance to drink, smoke, or go clubbing, Marsh says that he was “surprised” at TDE’s discipline, which Tiffith finds “completely disrespectful.” He continues:

“Instead of putting emphasis on the good that TDE has done for west coast music, and for hip hop as a whole, he spoke on what most people would consider whats wrong with Hip Hop music. Furthermore, Kendrick deserved to be accurately documented. The racial overtones, immediately reminded everyone of a time in hip-hop that was destroyed by violence, resulting in the loss of two of our biggest stars. We would expect more from a publication with the stature and reputation that GQ has.”

While the article does describe good kid, m.A.A.d city as the “black Ulysses” and attempts to put Lamar’s success in the violence of his Compton home, the profile is largely positive as it documents the rapper’s rise to fame and his hectic 2013 (namely, the fallout from his infamous ‘Control’ verse).

To protest, Tiffith prevented Lamar from performing at GQ‘s annual Man Of The Year party on November 12. However, the rapper did freestyle as part of his GQ photo shoot; watch it below.
