Whilst GZA cranes towards the stars, Pursuit Grooves is taking inspiration from matters terrestrial.

Whatever Vanese Smith does, she’ll always have a place in FACT’s heart for 2010’s Tectonic mini-album Fox Trot Mannerisms – a gorgeous collection of sensuous beat music and bass-heavy collage, and possibly still the most ravishing LP on the label’s books.  2011’s juddering Frantically Hopeful proved an excellent follow-up, and she’s kept busy with a string of digital releases through her What Rules imprint since.

Having recently decamped to Toronto, Smith has just dropped a new full-length, Modern Day Minerals. The cassette/digital release collects 14 new tracks, all ostensibly inspired by geology – sample titles include ‘Rock Formations’, ‘Organic Chemistry’ and ‘Sulfites’. Groggy head-nod and deliberately clunky beat programming are the order of the day; click below to stream the record in its entirety.

Modern Day Minerals is available now. You can check Smith’s 2011 FACT mix here.
