Red Bull Music Academy has been at the forefront of musical innovation for fifteen years now.
To celebrate that achievement, they invited award-winning filmmaker Ralf Schmerberg to create a full-length feature film, and What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music is the result. Shot in New York last year, the film understandably has quite the cast, with appearances from (deep breath) Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Giorgio Moroder, Erykah Badu, Nile Rodgers, Rakim, Skream, Q-Tip, Bernie Worrell, Egyptian Lover, Ken Scott, Thundercat, Richie Hawtin, James Murphy, Debbie Harry and Stephen O’ Malley and many others.
The film’s purpose is to evoke the atmosphere of the event itself, and with a mixture of footage of participants as well as the celebrity tutors, it’s a great way to get a rare peek into the RBMA without actually having to set foot outside your house. If you’re interested in why artists make music, and what draws budding young producers into the scene, this might be an hour-and-a-half well spent.
