A new investigation on the 20th anniversary of the Nirvana frontman’s death.

While Kurt Cobain’s death on April 5, 1994 was officially ruled a suicide, conspiracy theories about the case have persisted, and this new development will probably stoke the flames: according to Seattle’s KIRO (via CoS), the King County Sheriff’s Office recently developed four rolls of film that had been in an evidence vault for years, revealing photographs that show the scene of Cobain’s death more clearly than Polaroids taken by investigators.

KIRO has obtained one of the images and will broadcast an interview with the detective who re-investigated the case tonight at 11 PM PST. According to police, the final investigation report has not been completed, and the photos will not be released. Police have said that Cobain had a lethal dose of heroin before he was shot; his heroin kit was also part of the re-investigation.

Update: Well, that was quick: police spokeswoman Renee Witt tells the Seattle Times that a cold case detective “dug up the files and had another look and there was nothing new” and that the case is not being re-opened.
