The Chicago label shuttered in 2001.
Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher’s Wax Trax! Records was initially an offshoot of their Chicago record store, with limited edition pressings (like Brian Eno’s ‘Lion Sleeps Tonite’ 7″) giving way to records by industrial and EBM heavyweights Ministry, KMFDM, Front 242, Coil, Revolting Cocks, and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. The label was active throughout the 1980s before bankruptcy resulted in the label being sold to TVT, which shut it down in 2001.
While Nash died in 1995 and Flesher died in 2010, former Wax Trax employees have worked to keep the spirit of the label alive with WTII Records. Now, Julia Nash (Jim’s daughter) has announced plans to relaunch Wax Trax! with a new single by Cocksure, the duo of Ministry’s Chris Connelly and Jason Novak. ‘TKO Mindfuck’ will be available mid-June on 12″ and digital formats.
As for the future of Wax Trax, Nash writes that the focus will “likely focus primarily on limited vinyl pressings and special projects from new as well as established artists within the Wax Trax! family,” adding that “this has to be a labor of love, and if we don’t feel a connection with the project, it isn’t going to happen.”
Nash also updates fans on the status of he long-promised Wax Trax! documentary: “We are really getting mighty close to the end of our filming and then it’s into the editing room. The fog is starting to lift and we hope to have a better idea of a general release date soon.” [via Exclaim.ca]
