If anyone is entitled to use the all-encompassing phrase “bass music” without irony, it’s Rinse FM mainstay Marcus Nasty.

Having come through as a key figure in both grime and UK funky – and still rooted in both enough to be able to bash out a funky set at Eskimo Dance like it’s nothing – he is now one of the DJs most comfortable with joining the dots within the dizzyingly fragmented British club world. As he puts it: “there isn’t one particular scene at the moment, but to me, all the UK underground music scenes are healthy, and what’s most interesting is how they’re always crossing paths in events. In fact it’s rare that I get to play in an event that isn’t representing at least three genres these days – which I think is great.”

The Bass Clinique label that he’s founded – in partnership with fellow DJ/producers Junior Buzz, Threshold and Jay Bowly aka Organic Phunk – represents this, and his sets, perfectly. The music lined up for the first three releases has no truck with pernickety scene delineation or hierarchies of cool, with elements of bassline, nitrous-friendly tech house, funky, breakbeat – even moombahton and acid techno – coming together in pursuit of the perfect banger. The first release, by PVC (aka Purple Velvet Curtains), is basically old school garage with trap production values, and yes: it’s a banger. Stream it above.
