Ex-interns given green light to kickstart legal action against the major.

More than 3,000 former Warner Music Group interns in the US are about to receive a letter informing them of a class action lawsuit being pursued against the industry behemoth.

Yesterday, a U.S. district judge ruled that there was a sufficiently strong argument for notices of the suit to be sent to anyone else who may be eligible to join the class action.

The fact that it’s a class action means that if the suit reaches court and they win, anyone who completed a similar internship with WMG could also claim damages.

The lead plaintiff is Kyle Grant, who interned at Warner Brothers Records from August 2012 to April 2013. He says he worked five days a week, from 9:30am to 8:00pm, doing the kind of routine office tasks that might have been done by paid employees.

If the lawsuit does make it to court, it’ll become one of several similar cases currently being fought in the US which argue that full-time unpaid internships violate employment laws. [via CMU]
