London grimehouse Coyote Records is preparing to release Defiance, the debut EP by Chemist.
Blending the precision-tooled bass hits of Bloom with atmospheres that owe more to Visionist and Rabit – who contributes a remix here, along with past Zomby and Trim collaborator Last Japan – Defiance will be released in July. We’re streaming its title track below, accompanied with a short Q&A with Chemist.
Chemist, tell us a bit about yourself. Where did you grow up, what’s your background, how did you start making music?
I grew up in Coventry, now reside in Hatfield where I study composition and technology for film and games at Hertfordshire Uni. I started making music around 14 or 15 on FL 6, I couldn’t MC so attempted making beats instead and just stuck at it.
How did you hook up with Coyote, and how did Defiance come together?
I liked Tomas’s releases and direction he’s gone with the label plus I had been following it a little while prior, so thought i’d send him some stuff to see what he thought. I made ‘Defiance’ and ‘Blocks’ with a couple of concepts in mind after I’d signed ‘Hoodrat’ to Coyote Kings and Tomas liked the vibe of the tracks. We discussed who would do justice on remix duties and having Rabit and Last Japan take the reins was special, I’m well impressed with what they’ve done.
It’s your full debut release, do you reckon it’s an accurate introduction to you?
I think so, it’s definitely the vibe I’m about anyway. I like to play with immersive atmospheres, cold sound palettes and a kind of rawness too.
What else do you have in the pipleline?
I’ve been experimenting with different tempos away from the standard 140 bpm and I’m trying to build concepts for an album at some point in the future, maybe. But that’s way down the line I think, more EPs would be nice in the near future. There’s a tune coming on Coyote Kings Vol.2 and my remix of Footsie’s ‘Prang Boy’ will be out through Coyote on white label before the end of the year.
I’ve also got a couple of dates confirmed for London in July too. Boxed at Birthdays on July 4th, and the BPM x Coyote x Get Some party at the Bussey Building on July 12th, so I’m looking forward to those.
