As previously reported, Glastonbury has renamed the iconic Left Field Tower in honour of late politician Tony Benn.
Erected back in 2004, Glastonbury’s Left Field Tower is now a well-worn part of the festival’s skyline, and was beloved by British left-wing politician Tony Benn, who passed away in March. In Benn’s honor, the festival has renamed the tower to Tony Benn Tower, which is particularly fitting as Benn, a noted friend of the festival, had described it as a “tower of strength” back in 2004.
As The Guardian reports, Eavis spoke at the Tower, which sported a giant hanging poster of Benn accompanied by the words “He encouraged us”, today.
“What a fantastic fella, eh? Principled”, Eavis said. “A conviction politician who didn’t do what was popular, he did what was right. He was so much a part of this. He was an A-star performer. How can we replace him, I ask you? We miss him so much.”
Benn’s granddaughter Emily was at the tower, and thanked the festival for “the experiences and the love he felt coming here … It’s a wonderful gift you gave him and he never forgot it, and the Benn family will never forget it”.
