Traditionally, one of several problems with the UK’s MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards was the fact that grime and hip-hop was bracketed together as one category.
This year, they’ve changd that, introducing a Best Grime Act category in association with the BBC’s urban network 1xtra. Nominated for 2014? Ghetts, Sox, JME, Lethal B, Meridian Dan, FACT TV superstar Big Narstie, and newcomer Novelist [above], who’s made a name for himself over the last 12 months collaborating with the likes of Mumdance, Murlo and Slackk.
Given Skepta’s independent hit ‘That’s Not Me’ (he also charted without the help of a major label with his Blacklisted album, released at the end of 2012), his omission seems like an oversight, but it still seems positive development overall.
Update: Now that the MOBOs have the nominations listed on their site, it turns out that Skepta and Wiley are both nominated. Neither were mentioned when the MOBOs first announced the nominations on Twitter.
The awards will be broadcast on ITV on October 22.
