This ain’t no California Love.
Okmalumkoolkat isn’t your average MC and as such most of his videos aren’t your average music videos either. Starting with his collaborations with LV for Hyperdub, the Durban-born rapper has had a knack for thinking out of the box when it comes to the format.
His latest effort is a video for the title track from his first solo EP, Holy Oxygen I, released in the summer by Vienna-based Affine Records (who got a mention in our 2014 Best of Bandcamp list). The EP is produced by local duo Cid Rim and The Clonious, whose hip hop meets dance music beats propel Koolkat’s lyrics.
Directed by Wim Steytler, the video taps into the song’s lyrics of abandonment and wider themes of social issues to paint a picture of a wasteland world a la Mad Max.
Speaking on the video, Steytler said: “I am very interested in creating a body of work that isn’t afraid of putting society’s most pressing social issues into a context of popular culture. It’s a great place to open up dialogue about sometimes uncomfortable topics, especially among young people.”
Watch it for yourself below. The EP is available in digital and vinyl formats.
