Western Australians, generally speaking, have a love-love relationship with surfing.

In recent years, however, that relationship has been tested by an increase in fatal or near-fatal shark attacks – Perth, we’re told, is the “shark capital of the world”. The most interesting recent development in the battle against shark attacks, however, comes not from a champion surfer but an ordinary man, keen swimmer Hamish Jolly.

As we find out in the Shark episode of Mazda Rebels’ video series on inspiring characters, Hamish’s shark deterrent wetsuits look at natural evolution for inspiration, focusing on the striped pilot fish, a species of fish that sharks don’t attack and can swim without fear. Want to know how Hamish applies their attributes to humans? Watch the video below.

Mazda’s Rebel series profiles inspirational people from around the world who defy convention in order to make things better. Each film in the series gives viewers an insightful look at the lives of world’s many challengers, and the different ways people can improve their lives and the lives around us. For more information, head to the Mazda Rebels Community Hub, and to win a chance to dive with sharks, enter their competition here.
