Type’s first record of the year is a heady trip into overdriven guitar sounds.
A former member of Burning Star Core and several other projects, and a notable solo artist in his own right, Mike Shiflet has been a fixture in the noise realm for well over a decade. On his latest record, he’s teamed up with guitarist John Kolodij – otherwise known as High Aura’d – to create an improvisational LP of powerful but delicately constructed compositions for the Type label.
Recorded over the course of three autumn days in Kolodij’s Rhode Island studio surrounded by amps and strings, Awake is described by the label as a “direct descendent of Godspeed You! Black Emperor or even Glenn Branca, but has been smudged, distorted and delayed beyond recognition,” made up of six tracks that are “the ghosts and outlines of songs”.
The track ‘Parlour Games’ can be streamed below, and its overdriven waves of delayed guitar makes the label’s description of the duo’s music as having echoes of Tim Hecker and Yellow Swans seem very apt. Awake is available now through Type (full disclosure: a label independently operated by FACT’s John Twells).
