Detroit: the birthplace of techno, the home of Motown, and if not quite the first, then a significant territory for hip-hop too.
From The Temptations to Slum Village, the city’s musical legacy has been documented countless times, and both veterans such as Rick Wade and Waajeed, and rising stars like Jay Daniel are doing a fine job at keeping its star shining.
FACT’s Maxwell Schiano spent a week in Detroit over the Christmas period, photographing some of the city’s key artists – as well as some nearby acts with family links there, such as Ann Arbor’s Shigeto – as they wound down and braved the snow for the holidays.
