The five-track EP explores the city’s fertile club music underground.
Having recently signed up Shangaan electro figurehead Nozinja for a forthcoming album, Warp has revealed it will be exploring more international club flavours with a new EP of Portuguese talent.
Cargaa 1 features five tracks from a clutch of Lisbon producers combining African genres like kuduro, batida, kizomba, funaná and tarrachinha with Western house and techno sounds. Honing in on Príncipe Discos artists DJ Marfox (pictured above), DJ Nigga Fox, Blacksea Não Maya, Tia Maria Produções crew member DJ Ly-COox and the lesser-known DJ Nedwyt Fox, the release comes off the back of a wave of interest in a sound previously confined to the suburbs of the Portuguese capital.
According to Warp, the EP’s name is a popular slang term among Lisbon’s young producers. Roughly meaning “hot” and “heavy”, they frequently use it to describe their music on SoundCloud comments, mixes and even in track titles.
The EP will be released on April 7, and follows a recently-announced EP on Príncipe from Nigga Fox. His track ‘LUMI’ can be streamed below, and for more on the scene, read FACT’s interview with the Príncipe crew from 2013. [via Tiny Mix Tapes]
