Sam Smith has finally been knocked off his perch.
Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly has scored the rapper his first No 1 album in the UK, pushing Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour into the No 2 spot.
Released a week early last Monday (March 16), the artist’s second album quickly broke the record for the most streams in a single day worldwide by a new release on Spotify. According to data from the Official Charts Company, the album sold just 572 copies more than Smith’s, but the recent move to include streaming data for the UK albums chart helped Lamar take the number one spot comfortably.
Lamar’s last album, Good Kid M.A.A.D. City only reached No 16 in 2012. As well as scoring him his first UK number one, the album has also topped the charts in Australia.
Update: Lamar scored his first number one in the US, as well. Billboard reports that To Pimp a Butterfly sold 324,000 copies in its first week (and 363,000 “equivalent album units”).
