XL celebrates what would have been Scott-Heron’s 66th birthday.

Last year, XL Recordings released Nothing New — a collection of vocal-and-piano version of songs from Gil Scott-Heron’s back catalogue — as a limited edition vinyl-only LP on Record Store Day.

The album, recorded in New York with XL producer Richard Russell between 2005 and 2009, has now been made available digitally for the first time, on what would have been the poet’s 66th birthday. Scott-Heron passed away in 2011.

The iTunes release will also feature Who Is Gil Scott-Heron?, a documentary by BAFTA-nominated filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, who directed the Nick Cave feature 20,000 Days On Earth. A 10-minute excerpt is available on gilscottheron.net and screenings have been scheduled for New York and Washington, DC (details will be announced soon).
